This is the fourth, and last, installment in a series featured weekly on Tuesdays.
Character customization in WoW is pretty limited to face, skin and hair color, hair styles, and sometimes accessories such as jewelry or facial markings. Some races and genders only have a handful of options, while others have three times as many. Even so, you will at some point run into a character that looks just like yours. The only way we truly can be unique snowflakes in WoW is with our character’s name.
In this week’s installment, we look at creating a character’s name using Azerothian languages.
Ok, I Lied
I said last week’s installment would be the last. And, although I’m declaring this to be the last installment, I reserve future posts to continue this series at any point in the future and on any day of the week.
I might remember something I forgot to include, such is the case with this installment. Or I might come across a new resource that I want to share.
And make a new post.
Online Translation
There are quite a few languages used in the land of Azeroth. Perhaps you would like your character’s name or hunter’s pet name to be authentically Azerothian.
WoWWiki’s Language page is a good place to start. Language samples are provided on each Alliance/Horde language’s individual page. Some have more information than others.
I was bummed to not find any other online translation resources. If you know of any, please let me know - I’d love to try them out!
Ingame Translation
This is the best way to come up with a name in your chosen language. You’ll need a friend to help. Change the language you are speaking to your character’s native tongue. The option to do is available in your chat menu via the “chat bubble” on your chat box. Then you simply say the word you want translated and your friend says it back to you in either Orcish (Horde) or Common (Alliance).
Mania brought up the topic earlier this year and provided a good example. The comments are worth a read through as some commentors shared their own experience using this technique.
