In response to the shared topic over at Blog Azeroth, and also because it deserves a post of its own versus cramming it somewhere in Mama Druid’s character page, I present to you the names belonging to my main character.

Liuna

This was her first name. I had been using the prefix “Liu” for my characters in Shadowbane. Luna means moon in Spanish, which I had studied for my four years in highschool. It also represents the Roman moon goddess, who Elune is most likely modeled after. Combining Liu and Luna made perfect sense for my new Night Elf druid.

Anuil

When I transferred her from the PvP server to the RP server, I had to rename her as Liuna was taken. In fact, pretty much any variation of her name was being used. There were a LOT of characters using Luna in one way or another. I couldn’t think of anything I really liked and most certainly didn’t want to be another Liu or Luna running around. Strangely, I didn’t perform my usual ritual of online research when it comes to naming characters. So I simply, and uncreatively, reversed Liuna and she entered her new home as Anuil.

Selenyx

While looking up names for alts, I “invented” Selenyx. I use godchecker.com quite often to look up names. I was trying to come up with a name for a Night Elf hunter, one that incorporated the meaning of moon and night, when I found these names.

Selene - Greek deity. Silvery Goddess of the Moon. She is pale, beautiful and
indefinably alluring.

I could do without the alluring bit, but this Night Elf I was going to create would have long white hair and pale skin. Silvery was a good description and Goddess of the Moon was a bonus due to its similarity with Elune and Night Elf lore.

Nyx - Greek deity. Goddess of the Night and daughter of CHAOS.

Awesome! Goddess of the Night - could this be more perfect? I don’t think so.

I did a little more research on Wiki and Google, learned that Nyx was a primordial goddess. Even better.

So I had this cool name, ended up not using it on that Night Elf hunter and instead gave it to a baby druid who did not last long.

When The Hubby and I decided to transfer Mama Druid and his bitty gnome rogue (yet again!) I decided she’d be Selenyx. She had pale skin and white hair, so it worked out just great!

  1. I love the way you’ve come up with your names! I always find it difficult to come up with names for my characters - a bit of a shame since I’m an altaholic! lol

  2. Thanks Softi. Another site I use is 20,000 Names. They have a handy dandy drop down menu on the top right, giving you options such as Blood Names, Celestial/Planet Names, Metallic Names, Sacrificial Names, Names from around the world, etc. Oh, and I also lookup names I might think of on the Armory and if there are 5 pages of players with the same name, I’ll try to come up with another. With the lack of character customization in WoW, names are about the only way we can be unique snowflakes!

  3. Oh thanks for that link, I’ll check it out!
Re the WLW… I so wish there was a version of it for mac, none of the blog-editing software for mac is as good as that - I had to go back to doing it all through the darn wordpress dashboard >_<

  4. Funny you mention it - I was a bad girl and downloaded it at work, where we don’t have Macs… but that’s what I play WoW on at home! I do most of my blogging at work, so the Live Writer is fantastic in that regard.
It’s always good to know another Mac player. :)
